Those preparing for a government job usually have just a few examinations or departments in mind. But do you know there are several government organisations you may have rarely heard about? The fact is that you have more options than you realise.
At the Rozgar Mela in Pune in September 2026, 223 candidates received appointment letters. They were recruited by organisations like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Airports Authority of India, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Department of Posts and Railways. The Staff Selection Commission’s Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination recruits for several government departments.
Even in one of the most sought-after government organisations, the Indian Railways, recruitment is not limited to loco pilots, guards, ticket checkers, station masters or ticketing clerks. You can also join the Railways as a junior accounts assistant, clerk, translator, laboratory assistant, technician or healthcare worker.
These are not new vacancies. But this shows the range of organisations where government jobs exist. And many young jobseekers may not be aware that they do not necessarily have to apply directly to every organisation to work there. And neither do you need an engineering degree for all these jobs.
For instance, there are a few railway recruitment categories that accept graduates from different disciplines. And some clerical posts are open even to candidates who have passed Class 12. Other positions require specific technical qualifications, language skills or typing proficiency.
In 2025, the Railways advertised vacancies for graduate-level posts such as Goods Train Manager and Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist. A separate recruitment notification was issued for undergraduate-level clerical and ticket-related posts.
Of course, this does not mean that these jobs are easily available. And an appointment ceremony does not indicate which organisations are currently hiring. Different posts have different eligibility requirements, examinations and selection procedures. But if you have spent a long time preparing for just one examination, a review of other recruitment routes that match your qualifications would certainly be worth it.
You can begin by checking the official SSC and Railway Recruitment Board websites. Scan the posts listed in their recruitment notices, the required qualifications and the selection process. Also, do not forget to check the recruitment notices issued directly by government organisations. For a career in the government, you don’t have to focus only on the examination everyone around you is preparing for.
